Handyman Tips - Tip on locking your front door

Posted by

This may seem like a silly tip but trust me, it is a good one. If you are one of the people that likes to turn the lock on your door knob, and then pull the door shut behind you to lock your front door, I recommend that you change this habit.

Your front door should have a door knob and a deadbolt. You should always lock the deadbolt. The deadbolt is the one that will slow down an intruder trying to get into your home. Locking the door knob is not really necessary as long as you lock the deadbolt.

But safety isn’t the only reason to lock your deadbolt instead of the door knob. It is very easy to lock the door knob and pull the door shut behind you when the key is still inside your home. You can’t do this when you lock the deadbolt. If you have forgotten the key inside your home, then you will not be able to lock the deadbolt.

You will never lock your keys inside your home if you only lock the deadbolt. Make it a habit to lock the deadbolt and not the door knob.
